Boredom.
The price one pays for a lack of effort in life. The price he now paid as the aged red buck lay beneath the boughs of a slender young tree, the red of poppies all around him.
A soft gust of dust and leaves puffed up as a great sigh poured from the slight opening in a white faced mask stained with the rust of blood. One scarred leg stretched its way outwards, parting the thick stems of the flowers, sending a shower of red down upon his even redder hide.
A rain of blood. How fitting.
Pale grey eyes watched the torrent as it settled, some still dripping over his shoulder to pool gently at his chest. An image of a heart torn away...Eyes closed and memories played.
Dark.
Blood.
Bleeding...
Far, so far from the dark ennui that held him now. A life of action, of violence, of...murder. Dark guilt filled him, flooded him. He was drowning in it!
An explosion of greenery and red as he lurched unsteadily to black hooves. Stumbling, falling he moved from the dark clutch of memories long gone but still dragging, crawling within the darkest places of his mind.
He had to escape, but the strength was drawn from him, pulled away, torn away and dragged kicking and screaming back to that place. Back to the red that forever stained him. He dropped to his knees, breath rushing in a humid mist from the strangling confines of the mask.
He couldn't breathe!
He couldn't run!
He...
...didn't have to.
The buck collapsed, sweat sodden coat steaming in the cool fall breeze as scarred sides heaved with the need for air. He calmed, watching as the sunlight trickled down, soft and golden, through the branches of the trees.
There was nothing here to run from anymore.
