There is a way to trick the game to let you keep, but it goes away after you close the game.

To get it: start with no pelt on. Pray to the statues until you have the pelt. After you get it, disconnect, and wait for the game to reconnect. Make sure you stand up before it connects again. If it worked, the "halo" that goes with the pelt will be gone and the pelt will stay.

Sometimes it doesn't work and you have to try again, but just keep trying and it should work. =]
