The Journey Ahead (shortstory)

You have spent your life searching for something. You do not know what it physically is, but you do know that it is the key to unlocking something special. A hidden ability, a useful skill, maybe even some kind of superpower. You've heard the legend before, and upon your arrival to a land far from where you live, you ask the locals where to go to find the treasure you seek.

They point to the highest peak of a forested mountain, and as you squint, you can see a strange sliver of stone jut out from the ground. An obelisk awaits you, and according to legend, it grants a new skill to every traveler who climbs the peak to reach it.

You are prepared as instructed - you do not bring anything with you but the comfortable clothes you are wearing. The journey is short so there is no need for extensive gear or food. A simple water bottle is all you bring.

You begin the hike by walking underneath a man-made wooden arch. It is oriental in nature, but could have been built here by anyone. You walk on the path that slants upward, stone cobbles provide stairs to ascend the mountain. All around you are a variety of trees, all different shades of green. You see many colorful birds fly beneath the treetops, going about their daily routines, singing to one another, and so on. On the ground, you notice squirrels, chipmunks, and rabbits constantly cross the path. Some stand off the trail, nibbling away at nuts and acorns they have found. Their eyes watch you as you continue on. In the distance, you see a stag and doe grazing. They pay no mind to you, eating the grasses from the forest and bathing their brown fur in the rays of sunlight that penetrate through the trees.

You continue walking, taking sips of your water when you need it. You stop when the ground evens out, hearing the gentle sounds of water. As you walk on, you see a small river has cut through the path. Stepping stones have been placed for those on the trail to cross. You take a breath and step onto the first stone. As you carefully move your foot, you notice a rainbow trout leap from the river over the stone walkway. You continue on, walking the path across with ease. Before you go any further, you watch the water for a moment, listening to the calming sounds, noticing a few dragonflies that hovered over the lily pads. You wish you could stay at this spot, but you need to move on. There are more important things for you to find.

You keep going on the trail, ascending once more. As you climb, you find a spot where a huge ravine has been etched in the mountain. A bridge has been built from one side to the other, and so you once again take a breath and begin to cross it. The sounds of your footsteps on the wood echoes into the silence of the area. You look down to see a beautiful rock wall, layers of colors alternate in the sunlight. You peer over the side of the bridge and see that miles down is a river. You wonder if this is the same river you crossed earlier. You continue, making it to the other side.

As you walk further, you notice a strange stone laying on the path. You pick it up, observing an intricate symbol that you seem to be familiar with. You hold onto it, and with the next few steps, you notice the air has gotten colder. You must be getting close to the top of the mountain.

You then can see the top of the obelisk appear before you. With every step, it becomes taller and larger. Other strange statues and idols line the path, the faces on them seem strange but protective. You finally make it to the obelisk, and staring up, you begin to wonder how it was possibly built. It is very tall and has strange patterns carved into it. You notice near the base of the obelisk that a section seems to be missing. It is the same size and shape as the stone you found earlier, and upon inspection you notice that it should fit perfectly. You place the stone into the space where it belongs, and at once the obelisk reacts, creating a low rumbling and emitting an odd teal radiance.

Then it stops. You wonder what had just happened, but then you hear a voice speak to you. There are no others around - it seems to be speaking through the wind. It says:

"You have come to find something new, you have come to seek a new skill. But did you know that the skill you seek is already a part of you? You have always had it, and you will soon learn its potential. Do not think that this journey was a waste. You came to discover something new, and along the way, you found yourself."

I forgot to mention that this

I forgot to mention that this was written for my mom's psychiatrist. Mom printed out some of my stories to share with her so I wrote this one for her.
