Instincts and Heartbeat

Caramel-stained white flicked like a darting bird as the deer's tail brushed away a pesky fly. The morning brought sweet dew to the dry grass, making it palatable for the first time in days considering the heat and blazing summer sun overhead. Sweat dappled the beast's coat in the usual places, sodden below the shoulders and along the face. The deer had stopped stock-still to graze at the very spot on which it stood.

Long legs propelled the deer over the land. As the deer sped forward, its tail flew high to mark the passing of the pair of weapons it proudly carried tucked down above its outstretched neck. No sign of strain showed on the beast's face, though flaring nostrils and an open mouth demonstrated the masses of oxygen the beast took in on every breath to power its form.

Swallowing the pulped vegetation, the animal scanned its surroundings with eyes that seemed to house a free soul. A smile crossed the humanoid face as he had crossed the land, and faded just as quickly. "Friend?" He asked, deep and primal. "Foe?" A puzzled look crossed his face as he sniffed the air, inhaling scent on the air.
