The fawn cried out in exhaustion and loneliness, her eyes dripping glossy tears that were beginning to wear away her skin in chapped lines. The tears were hot, they stung and she could not stop crying. Little blackened spots dotted her path where the tears littered the ground, glistening before fading in puffs of blue smoke.
Gods, the tears BURNED! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO CURSE ME, MOTHER? FATHER, WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY? The fawn choked, crying out to the heavens and her parents. Upset and tired, the fawn collapsed to the moss of the forest, her tears finally exhausted to nothing. Unwilling to go in to the light to replenish herself in full, Phion fell asleep in a dim ray of forest sun, slowly building strength so that she would not have too much again.
Her curse was painful, you know... She can't hold too much light at once... or she will release it and cause power to explode out of her eyes, her mind, her body, destroying anything that comes in contact with it. She knew that the powers were given to her to save the forest and its creatures, but this fumbling that she was doing in an attempt to control them was atrocious. Brush and flowers sprung up where she layed, causing the young doe to sneeze violently. Soon, the dust coated her fur again so heavily that she had to stand and shake it off, gold pluming around her like feathers. And her head itched.... her spine itched... little spikes grew like pins from her scalp and spinal-area, itching and becoming longer by the day, starting to rupture as she rubbed them on trees and showing soft down.
Feathers were a pain.... life was a pain.... being a God-Child was a pain....
another tiny cry sounded, frustratedly echoing through the forest's loneliest parts.
"Such pain...such beautiful
"Tell me, little one, what is it I could do to ease that beautiful pain? Do you wish for a way out from this world? I could arrange it...", Iugulare spoke coldly, her face slightly emerging from the shadows, a slick, rounded snout with an intrigued, toothy grin...
The voice was one she knew.
No, Iu.... She spoke, pronouncing the nickname as "eew." The little fawn was not trying to be mean with her nickname, she just could not correctly pronounce the stoat's full name: Iugulare.
Now before anyone says anything, Phion still does not know that evil is no more than a game. She thinks battles, though painful, are just rough playing. She is hopelessly confused on why anyone would want to hurt her, so she talks to the stoat of the Infection.
I like living. I just am sick of not knowing how to control my...er....gifts. This pain is not beautiful... it is starting to wear lines in my face. The fawn stood slowly, shaking off vines before showing the stoat the chapped skin on her cheeks, extending in two tear-tracks of beat-red skin with no fur. And these little spines that grow in on baby birds are growing in on me. I know I am not a baby dove or a baby crow. Phion grumbled.
She looked at Iu disgruntledly.

The stoat stepped out more,
"Tell me, why do you cry then?", she questioned intently. The fawn intrigued her now, a slight sound in the back of her throat much like a purr, which was unusual for a creature that looked more like a weasel rather than a cat.
The fawn did not move, did
Phion incinerated a stray drop of infection that threatened too close to her skin. She sneezed at the smell. I guess it is only fair that I ask a question too, right? She caught the eyes of the stoat for a bare moment. Why are you so bent on killing off my family and our forest? Especially getting close to me when you know I can turn you in to a smoldering pile of ash if I so much as find the whim to do it... because I cannot control all of my gifts yet? She pinned her ears for a brief second, glowing, before smoldering back in to herself. The plants grew dry and whithered about her from too much sun, cracking and dying at the slightest touch. The fawn snorted more frustration. That was two questions.... and I am trying.... but that would have given the most hardened deer a sunburn.
Am I a monster just like Iu?
(thanks, starling! The avatar is amazing! And Thanks Pretzil for the siggie!
The stoat listened to her
"It simply is a matter of perspective to what you would call 'good' and 'evil'. I don't consider myself 'evil'. No...'evil' is the Twin Gods, my child. They are the ones who force your species into doing favors for them. They are the ones who destroy at will when they choose. They are the ones who refuse to let creatures like you be free. I am not like them at all, I offer a dream to those who seek it, in return for possession of their body. Think about it, what would you rather have? This painful, dramatic, terrible world you live in here, or a safe world where everything you've ever wished for came true? Now what is 'evil' about offering that?", she spoke.
Readjusting and hearing the other questions, she answered them as well, "My child, I am not killing anyone. They simply are killing themselves. I offer them a peaceful escape in return for their body, and they refuse my gift, retaining their precious bodies until the infection eats them to death. It is their choice to die, not mine.
No...no I need them to be alive...because I have plans...", she looked up to the sky here, "Yes...plans...and these powers of yours which you cannot control, I see they are damaging you. Why do you continue like this when you could be free? What is there to life you cling to so dearly?", she spoke, a smug smile on her face here.
This will be too easy...but why am I bothering speaking to this one when I could just pounce on her?
I like my life because I can
Why do you hate my Mom and Dad so much, Iu? I mean, they are just trying to protect us from losing our bodies when you want them... and why would you want them anyways? When every deer is gone and they all are stuck in their own dreamlands you will be lonely. I think you would take Ana and Nekumbra too, in the end.... Are those the right names? For the dragon and the spider-doe that eats fawns? She asked, not really bothering to wait for an answer before continuing.
I just want to learn how to control my powers, is all... so I can keep the forest clean if need be... You probably know by now I will not hurt you if you dont attack me, right? I think it is called being "civil." All this from a fawn. It was amusing, but completely true. Phion did not see anything really evil about Iugulare, just want that drove her, hell-bent, to do this to their world.
Am I really talking with Quad's enemy? And really, is it all bad that she is a control-freak?

The fawn's words angered her. "'Mom and Dad'? Those gods have interfered with my plans, you little brat! I didn't travel halfway across the galaxy to be turned away! I didn't plan all of this out for nothing!", she snarled, her fangs drooling infection.
"I only ask for the bodies of all the deer here, so I can take them back to my home world and set everything right. I see all these deer with their great antlers and strong muscles, and I know they can do exactly as I want."
She sighed here, calming down a little, "A young thing like you would never understand how my civilization works. The weak are useless and simply need to be run by the strong. And with your deer, I will be stronger than them." She approached with intention...
Iu, If you never tell me
Maybe Mom and Dad would give you a new body, Iu... one that could be nuzzled and would not fall away when you walked. You could enjoy sunlight. You could teach me things, and I would teach you things. She offered, eyes fading as her fur did.
Iu, I think my gifts tell me you can not hurt me by your self, and I can incinerate any of those wolf-things you can send after me. Now, I know I am just a fawn, but do not think for a moment that I am ignorant.

Iugulare tilted her head, and
She approached, and the fawn immediately realized that the stoat was trying to manipulate her. She immediately pounced on her, infection slowly wrapping around her.
"Do you take me for a fool? I don't want peace! I don't want your stupid way of life! I want this universe all to myself! I want chaos! I want war! I want dominance!", she snapped.
"My species wants to learn about all the other living organisms of the universe. They are fools compared to me! I could easily take my planet over if only those damned Twin Gods would stay out of my business!", she tightened her grip on the fawn here, and then...released her, and stepped back, angrily hissing at her.
Phion seared away the
And yes, Iu. I think you could just live here peacefully. Nobody would condone you for what you have done if you just leave it like it is. I mean, you could be without all that pain that you carry, if you just ask. Just like me, you could get rid of it. Not hard at all. She smiled, tail flicking behind her. The stoat wanted more than anything. She wanted everything.
Iu, you already have this universe to yourself. Everyone already lives within their own universe, did you know that? She asked, laying down again to become level with the stoat. Iugulare was really a mean person, Phion was starting to think. The ethereal fawn rested her head on the grass, and blew a little bit of the Endless Forest dust in to the air. It whirled and glittered away on the wind.
I just would rather see you not get hurt in the end. Both of us will, and neither of us want to. A little compromise is all that needs to happen, I think. Toads! If I am stuck being your mother and you a new fawn with an old mind, I think that would be enough of a compromise for the both of us! Plus, you could start new. YOu already have the whole universe.

Iugulare ignored much of what
She was pacing here, her anger growing steadily. The fawn was really getting to her.
"No. After all I have done here, I would never, never be accepted here. I refuse to believe that your kind would ever offer me anything else than their revenge. You don't understand the world, child. It's not as lovey-dovey as you believe."
The fawn looked startled.
Iu. This world is full of Upset and Fear, those were the first emotions I woke up with here. I know they exist and they exist for everyone. I am not phased because I choose not to feel them. I choose not to listen to threats because I know I am free to be a part of this world and can deal with whatever is thrown at me. I do not have to be an infected stoat to see that. And I do not think being mean to you would help anyone. By my father, I would even protect you myself if you wanted. I would tell everyone to be nice to you or I would burn their noses or set their fluffy tails alight. Phion smiled. She wanted Iu to be her sister, so that they could play together and be friends. Iugulare really needed a friend, no matter how fawn-minded that sounded.
Backing up, the fawn peered at Iu with her big, green eyes. Woudn't you want to be free of Quad's fighting forever? Live without worrying that the Gods were going to send he and I to incinerate you at any moment? You could de-animate those hounds so that you can get your power back and you wouldn't have to worry about them. Like me, they could probably give you a healing power or something... maybe when you grow up you could even have a huge set of antlers on your head to spar with. I think you would be good at that, Iu.

Iugulare turned for a moment,
Soon after, Phion heard a deer nearby call for help...and then silence...
She returned to the fawn, but with an infected stag as well. The deer was under her control, and lowering his antlers toward the fawn, it seemed more threatening than the stoat was.
"Look, child. I've had it with your games and words. This will be the fate of your planet soon enough. If you think for a moment I would remove my infection from those wolves...if you think for a moment I would surrender to those gods, you're completely wrong! I don't need my own antlers when I can simply take a set from these weak-minded fools."
She had had quite enough of this conversation.
"I'm through talking to you. You may be able to hurt me, but your friend here will certainly be able to hurt you!"
And immediately, the stag charged at Phion...
Phion stared in horror for a
Phion would not let the burning tears well in her eyes as the stag rounded for another charge. She brushed warmth over the stag, incinerating the infection while barely harming the beast. Her frustration caused her pictogram to pulse and her small form to shake. All she could do now was try to avoid the antlers of the still-infected stag. Crouching low, the fawn took a dive beneath the stag, a bright light enveloping both before the stag bolted, very scared but free of the infection. Phion, however, had a hoofprint on her ear and a bruise on one thin leg. Standing, she tried not to show her pain.
You're grumpy, Iu. Who said anything about surrendering to the gods? They don't ask for allegiance. They only ask that the deer of our forest stop getting hurt. You just stopped being civil, Iu. Phion advanced on the stoat, eyes glimmering and body charged. She focussed her pictogram and sent out a plea for forgiveness to the gods in a whisper.
I am sorry, Iu. She spoke sincerely before sending a ray of light directly on the stoat's head. The trees parted their boughs to let her gain more light before suddenly stopping. The smell of infection smoldering permeated the air. Tears dripped from the fawn's cheeks, causing fresh waves of pain and little circles of burnt earth on the ground. Her voice never faltered as she spoke.
I don't want to fight anymore, but if I have to, I will. I will not let this be the fate of my forest, and you will just have to become one of us or leave this world forever... leave every planet forever. Because our minds are stronger than yours in the most important way: We don't have rage weighing us down. The fawn shook her head, sending little droplets spraying everywhere, including Iu's nose. She shrugged a sorry.
Phion stood tall, even on her injured leg, peering eye-to-eye with Iugulare.

Iugulare now understood that
"You're much tougher than I expected. But that is good, very good...if it is not dreams you wish for, what about the universe itself? All I ask is for complete servitude, and I could give you an entire galaxy all to your own. Anything you desire, all the dreams you seek, you could do.
So how about it? This is one mere planet you wish to protect, but if you choose to obey me, I could give you countless worlds of your very own."
What would I need worlds for,
The one thing I want is for you to be one of us. I want you to have a body and a name, and lose your infection for good. She peered directly in to Iugulare's eyes. The fawn was being very difficult and she now understood a little of that.
Her body suddenly turned to jelly, falling on the ground in a tangle of legs. PLEASE, Iu? Play with me and be a deer with me. You would make such a good sparring partner. And... and.. maybe if Mom and Dad...gave you powers like mine... you could heal up my face. She peered up at the stoat with mind-melting do-what-I-ask-please fawn eyes. Even Phion did not know why she was so driven to get Iu to be her sister, but she still wanted it all the same. Her pouting face willed Iugulare to comply, but the stoat was proving difficult to persuade herself.
It is what I want. Nothing more. Even though I want your infection gone, I want you here. I like you very much. She was sincere, her ears pricking as she walked up to the stoat again, kissing her on the nose.
Please think about it? You would look so wonderful with a fluffy pelt and antlers... a pictogram glowing over your head... like a Queen of the Forest. Iu, the beautiful Queen of the Forest... the best sparring partner in the whole world. Phion sounded fawnish, wistful gaze turning away for a brief moment before focusing on the stoat again. I bet your pelt would be as soft as mink... and your antlers as sharp as a broken tree's splinters. She said before stepping back and out of the stoat's personal bubble.

She turned away, preparing to leave the area. She looked over her shoulder at the fawn, and spoke, "Anirapio or Nekumbra will come to eat you soon. I hope you enjoy the last few moments of your life.", and with that, she ran off, vanishing into the shadows of the trees.
IU, NO! That was NOT what I
All Phion wanted was a sister that loved her...and she had it set in her head that she wanted Iugulare the stoat to be her sister. I WONT ENJOY THE LAST MOMENTS OF MY LIFE IF YOU ARE NOT HERE, IU! IF YOU ARE NOT MY SISTER I WONT ENJOY THIS! AND I WILL HURT YOUR FRIENDS, TOO! Phion called, before falling in to a pout. She kicked a pinecone, sending it rolling away in to the brush. The fawn bucked around before falling in to another heap.
Why dont you want to be my sister? Phion sniffed, clearly upset by the whole ordeal. Her blond, soft ears drooped, lower lip quivering. A tear spilled over and burned a fresh wound on her cheek. The fawn squeaked, but she knew it was no good to try and wipe the burning little light away. Upset. Yet again the fawn felt the emotion Upset. You wouldn't have to be upset anymore, and neither would I. She buried her face in between her forelegs.
Why do I even bother? All I know is Iu should be my sister.... but I don't know how to get through to her!

A shadow grew across the
She smiled, spinning around to get a proper look at the dragon. She had heard about such beasts, and had seen the great lizard during a fight, but never had Phion seen her up close. I am as healthy as I will ever get.... but I would do bad things to your stomach... and well... incinerate you from the inside out if you ate me. It would prolly be a bad idea. She grinned happily before trotting up to the giant.
Phion sniffed Ana carefully. She rubbed her cheek and nose against the skin to test it, finding it cold and rather smooth for a dragon. Oddly, the fawn was not afraid as she sniffed claw and wing alike, before staring up at Ana's eyes. Curious, the fawn blinked once. Your voice tickles, did you know that?
Fawns.... always bucking up when they meet a new being, even if that being could swallow them whole. Phion had no sense of danger.

"What are you doing?",
"I don't know about that. My pouch is quite lined well. I've digested some very armored creatures on my home world...simply find a weak spot in their armor and the digestive juices penetrate through.", she spoke, tilting her reptilian head, "I'm quite tempted to test eating you and seeing about this 'incineration' you speak of. I'm not as vulnerable to light and heat as Iugulare is."
I have no armor like you
I know you are not as vulnerable... considering Quad had to drop you in the water... but I do know that I would incinerate your stomach.... and I do not want to. She stood as tall as she could so as to try and get to the dragon's level. This was difficult due to the beast's size.
I would not like to hear you cry out and die, Ana. It would be horrible.

"How interesting...", the
Anirapio's species enjoyed eating their prey whole. It was satisfying to feel a creature struggling and writhing within their stomach. They were driven more on instinct rather than right and wrong, as they had much higher metabolisms than most other creatures, they had to eat quite frequently, so they preferred to just devour their prey as they were alive rather than spend the time killing them before they ate.
A squirrel was scurrying by when she spoke the words. The dragon locked onto the rodent, and with her tail, she quickly snared it, wrapping around and squeezing it's delicate body.
She maneuvered her tail and showed the fawn her catch, the squirrel crying out and trying to free itself from the wrapping. Anirapio immediately opened her pouch and dropped the squirrel in. Phion could see a small bulge in the dragon's white belly where the squirrel was, it moving around trying to escape, the sounds of it still crying out penetrating through her skin.
"Now listen...", the dragon spoke, and as she did, the squirrel let out a loud cry before never speaking again. The bulge seemed to compress, the squirrel's body squished and drained of it's blood and muscle. The process only took a moment, and when she was done, she maneuvered her tail toward Phion, dropping out what was left of the squirrel in front of the fawn through a small slit at the tip of her tail. A mass of fur and bones hit the ground before the fawn.
"I'm sure it would be just as long for you as well. Could you concentrate your 'incinerating' powers while writhing in pain much like this squirrel? Or would it be too easy to overtake you?", Anirapio questioned.
The fawn watched the squirrel
Phion replied solemnly to the dragon. I would not die or wiggle like that little squirrel. And you would not like to lose your belly. It takes me half an eye-blink to turn something in to ashes, the birds know... I have been trying my best not to incinerate them, though. My gifts are very hard to control once they start, I think. She peered at the maw of the beast, though it was not at the place where it should have been. The pouch was intriguing, though Phion would not like to be inside of it.
Ana, do I really have to be eaten? I would rather not have to hurt you. Phion looked up at the lizard, brows knitted. I could always give you something in return... I dont know.... heal you if you are hurt? Or give you a new body that doesn't have to eat...like that? Free you from Iugulare? She was thinking of anything.... something...anything.
The fawn turned and stepped back a few paces so that she was just near the dragon's feet before she lay herself down. Ana was warm, despite her lizard-like appearance.

These words and actions of
With a heavy snort, Anirapio closed her eyes for a moment and thought. She was not as difficult to sway as Iugulare was, even if she expressed this in a negative way.
"...Fine. I'll spare you, but only because I don't know what you're capable of...and you are a little cute I suppose...", she looked down at the fawn here, "...a little..."
"But don't think I will be so lenient on you next time. If I hadn't have eaten that squirrel, I would not even consider letting you go.", she turned here, the warmth of the fawn leaving her body as she started to walk away. She stopped and let out a sigh through her nostrils, "There is nothing you could offer me, anyway. Not unless you could find a food source to feed an entire planet. I'm starting to doubt that Iugulare is really helping me at all...or simply wasting precious time..."
Thank you, Ana. The fawn
I am sure she had...minor good intentions in the beginning... but I would be skeptical of her now as well... If she ever gets a hold on this planet... she will not feed us to yours. That I am relatively sure of. The fawn spoke, watching the dragon Anirapio. Seemingly, the beast did not like the fawn... but maybe, just maybe Phion made a friend. Her quirkiness paid off in not getting her murdered twice in a row. Lucky little fawn... maybe too lucky, she was.
Oh... since I know your name... I might want to give you mine. I'm Phion. She smiled, realizing it was the first time she had given anyone her name. Maybe she was becoming one of the herd... even though Anirapio was not a part of the herd yet.
Have you tried Grass or Mushrooms yet, Ana? They grow really fast and taste very good.
(thanks, starling! The avatar is amazing! And Thanks Pretzil for the siggie!
"Grass? Mushrooms?",
She picks up one of the mushrooms and stuffs it into her pouch...not realizing it was poisonous...
A moment later she was feeling very dizzy, and collapsed near Phion. "Urghh...never again...will I eat one of those 'maushrooms'...urghhh..." She closed her eyes in pain.
Ana! That was not the right
Mushrooms are tricky sometimes. Here, this is something safe and very good. The fawn plucked a large mushroom off of a nearby tree. She deposited it in front of the pouch, backing away so as not to get eaten herself. The pouch was very scary up close and smelled of sulfur and something Phion had never smelled before. Later, she would remember it as the releasing of souls.... death.
Some mushrooms are not safe, but I know what ones are... and luckily, they grow just about anywhere. She smiled, laying down next to the dragon's head.

"Wh...what did you...how did
"...Not bad, really...hmm...", she said, actually enjoying the mushroom. "It's a shame we don't have these on Ibuzon. They would certainly help our famine problem there..."
For once...someone actually wants to help me?, she questioned in her mind.
Phion smiled proudly. She
Phion's eyes grew as mischievous as those of a young fox. Watch. I will make one for a dragon to eat. The fawn whispered to the ground, watching as a giant mushroom sprang up like a fire in dry tinder. It fanned out, sending a spray of Endless Forest pollen in to the air. Phion giggled, bouncing around in the golden pollen. Several smaller mushrooms took this as their cue to pop up under the umbrella of the big one.
Though in the human world they would seem poisonous due to their red-and-white-spotted coloration, they were harmless other than their ability to fill one's belly rather quickly.
Ana... if you took one of these and brought it home, do you think it would grow? She asked, trying to imagine a place the dragon would live... but unable to think past the forest.
(thanks, starling! The avatar is amazing! And Thanks Pretzil for the siggie!
"Hmm...possibly...but I doubt
"I'll have to look into this. It may be the exact thing I need...", she spoke, then looking down at the fawn, she said, "Thank you...I'm glad I didn't eat you now."
Her face morphed just a little...she actually looked like she was smiling despite not having a mouth on her face.
You are very welcome, Ana. I
Phion smiled back at the awkward smile of Anirapio. Her tail flicked as she did, showing the happiness from face to tail. A spore landed on her nose, and she sneezed it off, laughing.
Maybe now Ana would be free of Iugulare. Iu would not be happy, but she would be one less warrior to hurt with, and maybe that would help. Now, to find something...anything, that would make it safe for the spores to travel... through whatever space was. It sounded dangerous.
