Honoring the dead

quadraptor's picture
Here you lay, silenced after years of life. You were once strong, healthy, beautiful...

Well, to some eyes, you still are very beautiful, in your own way.

Who were you before? Were you kind? Brave? Stubborn? Wild?

How did you die? I would hope you passed with little pain...

Here you rest, your bones are all that remain of your life. You gave them as a tribute to nature.

How would you like me to reflect? What do you wish for me to do?

You are honored this day, not as one who has lost their life...

...but as one who has become part of the land itself.

Mmm, powerful. And I love the sentiment at the end. Ever since I learned that there was a method of 'burial' where a person could be used to plant a tree, I've wanted that so that even in death, I could be part of new life.

I heard about that too, it's not a bad idea at all! Odd thing to mention but I plan to be cremated when I die, and wasn't sure where I'd like my ashes spread, so I might do that myself.

This was a little thing I wanted to write for a long time. The photo is mine from Field Camp in Taos, NM. I really liked how the bones were surrounded by the grass, kind of like *don't kill me* Mufasa said, "When we die, our bodies become the grass."

Circle of life, eh?

I don't strive to be the best, but instead I strive to do my best, and always give it my all every time.
