There are days when something just seems different. The hair on the back of your neck stands up, every noise makes you jump. You can’t tell what it is, but you know something is about to happen.
It was one of those days for Teradeer.

Moonlight shone down into the forest, dancing on the coat of a lone deer. An eerie breeze rushed through the trees rustling the leaves and causing a shiver to run up the spine of the deer. It walked slowly, ears set on a swivel. Something just wasn’t right. The deer didn’t even know where it was going, almost as if it was in a sort of dream-like state.
Every slight movement caused a twitch of muscle or a slight jerk of the head to the tense deer. It lifted up it’s head to draw in a breath of air, to catch a whiff of the wind. A strange scent made it’s brow furrow.
Almost against it’s will, the deer found it’s feet carrying it towards this strange scent to investigate.
The scent lead the deer up a winding path that wound up the side of a steep hill. The deer had a fleeting hope that what ever it found would be worth the climb. As it neared the top of the tall hill, the scent became stronger; it expected to come across the source of the smell shortly.
It didn’t expect that scent to find it first, though

Jumping seemingly from out of nowhere came a large, black wolf. In one spring, it flew out of the sheer darkness and into a ray of moonlight directly in front of Teradeer. It sported a toothy grin of gleaming, white teeth.
Teradeer jumped slightly as the predator jumped into it’s view. Although, the deer wasn’t terribly frightened by it; it had seen worse than a wolf. The deer held it’s head a little higher and peered down it’s nose at the canine.
The black wolf didn’t seem uneased at the lack of reaction. The toothy grin only widened a bit.
“A midnight snack!” the wolf snarled with excitement, his teeth clacking together unnervingly with every word. The black predator poised itself for a lunge, back legs tensed and crouched, green eyes gleaming at it’s prey. He waited though, as if expecting a response. Oh, how the wolf longed for the thrill of the chase.

Teradeer lifted an eyebrow. This wolf wanted to eat it? Nothing had tried to eat the deer before, so the deer remained unafraid, not sure what kind of reaction the wolf wanted.
“Excuse me while I scream in sheer horror…” the deer said, the words sounding rather bored. It was already regretting climbing up all this way just to find this hungry dog.

This response clearly surprised the wolf, who lost it’s grin. What kind of deer was this that wouldn’t run from or even attempt to attack a wolf?
An easy meal it will be then, was the last thought before the wolf lunged at Teradeer, going straight for it’s neck.

The deer only had time to gasp in surprise as the wolf jumped for it. Teradeer hadn’t really thought the wolf was serious.

The wolf had aimed too high; that, paired with the sudden gasp of the deer, resulted in the wolf catching hold of the deer’s lower jaw.
So powerful was the lunge that it sent both deer and wolf tumbling backwards down the steep hill; the wolf holding fast to the jaw of the deer.

Teradeer’s eyes were wide with pain as they tumbled. The sounds were sickening as the jaw of the deer began to be torn off. A sudden crack and gut-wrenching tearing sounds were heard above the sound of their bodies rolling down the hill. They twisted and rolled over top of one another as they picked up speed, only serving to further rip the jaw off of the deer.
The pain was unbearable as tendons, bones, and muscles were ripped from their place. Blood sprayed, leaving a morbid trail as they rolled down the hill.
Finally -near the bottom of the hill- the wolf’s head collided with a tree, suddenly stopping it’s rapid descent with a thud. The deer rolled once, twice, three times more before it’s back hit a tree, also stopping it.
The pain in the deer’s neck and throat were unbearable and it almost immediately passed out from sheer pain and shock.

… It was suddenly bright, too bright. Teradeer opened it’s eyes, blinking away sleep. It was mid-afternoon, the day was unknown.
The deer felt no pain, but it tried to remember what had brought it here. It was hard to remember, almost like remembering a forgotten dream.
The taste and scent of blood hit it simultaneously. The deer quivered, What happened?

The deer could barely feel it’s feet as it struggled to stand. It’s back felt stiff.
Slowly, and with misty eyes, the deer looked around. It’s eyes widened slightly as they feel on a black wolf laying motionless uphill. The wolf had something bloody in it’s mouth, but the deer couldn’t quiet make out what it was so it dared to wander a bit closer.

When the deer drew close to the wolf it noticed the wolf was dead, un-breathing and skull, cracked; but, it still had a death grip on something. Teradeer leaned it’s head down to look at what the wolf was holding in it’s jaws. What the deer saw, made it’s stomach drop.

Teradeer’s blood ran ice cold, the deer remembered, it remembered what had happened that night. The eyes of the deer flew wide open as the stayed glued to the jaw, Teradeer’s jaw.

An absolutely perfect

An absolutely perfect reaction from Teradeer, sarcastic and in-over-it’s head, I had a good laugh at that. It was good to read something actually getting the best of Teradeer, since that doesn’t usually happen when I write; very refreshing. Thanks for entering my contest!
