I met a person through deviantart some years ago. We became FB friends. Two months ago they started playing TEF and I heard about it a couple days ago. They didn't know about the community, I tried to encourage them to introduce themselves here. They told they were too nervous because they had once casted a pelt spell to someone and that said someone seemed to have gotten angry about it.
I don't know if my friend will ever join the community thanks to that negative experience. :/ I wish people wouldn't go all IC towards clearly new players.
But if they come here, they might learn that that particular deer might not have been IC. Mini deer can't sneeze off unwanted pelts like other deer can, and have to go through a process in order to show their true pelt. Being pelted as a mini can get aggravating at times, and so they try to show others in-forest that they don't like it happening to them to simply get them to stop. Doesn't mean they are mad or anything, we are limited by the actions presented to us in the game. I'm not sure who it was that did that to them, but there are ways for minis to not get pelted while AFK as well.
There needs to be understanding from both sides, our side to not scare others off, but on the new side to maybe think there was a reason behind not wanting to be spelled.
Don't use attacking emotes on them. One needs to understand and have patience with the new players. They are rarely aware about how much effort goes into playing a mini... Try shaking your head, but no more than that. :) Maybe even take them to different spell casting props, or set your game not to run in bg and do something else until they leave.
Most of the time it's an honest mistake on the newbies part if they spell a mini. If you see them on the site, try gently letting them know, but never attack them!
That's a possibility as well. However, being a newbie and not knowing the tricks of TEF, it did affect them negatively and left a foul taste about the fun of spelling. Being a mini deer does not give out a reason to act rude towards newbies, there are ways to cope. Thanks for the input though, I'll be sure to inform them about not spelling the mini deer.
Yeah, it wasn't me who did it. I set mine to not show any players while I'm AFK, and I usually have my non-mini in-game at the same time in case Acacia loses her pelts. It's rare I see who pelts my characters, but I never mind.
