Blinks

I had laid by the side of the twitching hind hoping to offer her some comfort and warmth. Her eyes never opened, all she seemed to do was twitch and shake. I hoped if she woke she would not drive me off. Not being of her blood. I hoped she might know mother or know where to find her. I laid there yet felt no warmth from her. Only the buzzing sound of her breath. I must have dozed by her side my fatigue over took me and I slept for the whole day. Dusks shadows sped across the land. Then it happened.

I woke with a start to a sharp sound and looked up. My breath froze in my lungs. Stood over the hind above me was the monster. Glowing in the darkness its crown seemed bigger than before. It’s eyes glowing red, teeth bared, its stench filled my nose. It rose on its hind legs and brought its front legs crashing down. I rolled back as the cloven hooves slammed in to the hind I had laid by. The sound of bone snapping was so loud, It echoed in the woods and then silence. His hooves had smashed through her. Now her body started to buck and dance, and from it poured, maggots and other creatures, writhing in a bloody mass. Flies poured from the doe’s mouth in to an angry swarm their macabre feast having being disturbed. The air became putrid choking and festering. I gaged and choked trying to not breathe in the rotting stench coming from the hind.

I leapt to my feet as the monster struggled to free its front legs from the doe’s rib cage. It seemed to have become trapped in her. Its front drenched in gore, it seemed to rain blood around me as it thrashed around trying to break free from the hind...... I ran. Gasping and crying I dared not to turn, a wave of sadness washed over me as the image of the hinds face burned in to my memory.

The monster reared tearing it ‘self free and slammed it's hooves down again, and again. Taking its rage out on the corpse. The hind’s eyes opened reviling white orbs, pleading for the monster to stop from her mouth more insects pored trying to escape the monster as it destroyed the hind’s body. The sound of breaking bone and destruction followed me through the woods as I ran. Thud, Crash, Crunch! I ran ......

Why... what had she done... oh why!

I don’t have time to look, Must be faster, run, jump, land, run, I can’t, mustn’t, won’t stop. I won’t let the monster catch me. Hes coming I can here him hes

There! a sharp plant!, "aaaagggg!" forget the pain, close eyes pull forward, keep going. "aaaaaggg!" I'm bleeding my sides feel wet with blood my nose is blocked must stop and see..... The world is red around me. I blink...

He's gone. Yes... No I can hear him, his gasps of breath, He's coughing. I must have pushed him. This monster he has a weakness? Yet he is bigger than I. I feel him slamming his hooves in to the earth. Then a roar rises from his throat, my ears lay back and I collapse, my legs unable to hold me up. It seemed to shake the thick thorn plant I laid in. If I had had the strength I might have bolted, but no I can but lay here and wait for the monster to go.. to hope he will go... What have I done to cause him to hate me and wish me harm? Has he hurt mother? I pray not. I know though that If I had been on the grass he would have caught me and then.. no I can’t think of it. The doe, the poor d…..

A new darkness it coming over me I feel lost I can’t see him.... I .... I........
