self-deception

The first thing he realized when he entered the forest again was pain.

Horrible pain.

Broken bones, cutted and shredded skin, pierced lung.
This bod had no time to heal since he left the forest... after this fight...

He couldn't help it, the sudden outburst of pain let him scream... but this scream soon chanched into a manic laughter...

THe white stag lay on the ground, right there where he had left this place... he tried to look around, tried to see... but there was too much light... too bright...

Why couldn't he see...?
...ah yes... he remembered...
He had put down the goggles after the fight... too much blood on them... he couldn't see her...
...see her...

"I...llrose...." he mumbled... forced his aching body to move, tried to get the googles over his eyes again.
It took him some time...

It was a dream that had forced him to go back. A dream he had... a nightmare...
... the usual unwanted pictures of death and war... of needles and scalpels... the screams the smoke... the gunfire... sterile white rooms...

... but he also had dreamt about the forest.
About Jergens...
... about the fight...

And about his own death.

Finally the goggles where over his eyes again.
Jack sighed... giggled.

Yes, his own death.
He had died in this place...
... but he did come back.

This place hold no death for those who didn't belong here. And Illrose didn't belong here.
Like him she had her own world she could return to...

The white stag looked around.
Yes, this was the place where they had fought.
He had no idea how long it had been since then... time in the forest and in his own world flew differently.
Yes, this was the place... but there was no Illrose...
... no corpse...

A wild grin appeared on his face.
"Ja... ja... ja ja ja..."
('Yes... yes... yes yes yes...')

This was the proof, wasn't it...? No corpse... she had to be alive, yes?
No...
... no soldier that was no proof... no proof...
You are still a murderer.

Jack got up on his hoofes, moaned...
... he had to proof he was no murderer.
"Kein Mörder, kein Mörder, nein, nein.... he he... muss... muss es beweisen, ja."
('No murderer, no murderer, no, no... he he... have... have to proof, yes.')
And he had to hurry... not much time... no...
... they where after him... he couldn't stay for long here...

The white stag made a few steps... unsteady eyes hidden behind shaded glasses searched the ground, searched the trees around, the stones of the ruin... searched for a proof...

His ears twitched back and forth, cought the different noises of the forest.... searching...
Then suddenly he sensed someone familiar...

... not Illrose... but...
"Herr Virgil... hehe..."

Yes... yes... he would know... he would know... he would ask The Red.... and he would know... yes... for sure...

Jack snickered, slowly turning around, moved forward, step by step... slowly... limping towards the birtch forest....

... it took him some time until he reached the small group. The annoying big redhorn was with them...
... stupid dog...
Another croocked grin appeared on the white's face as he leaned against one of the birtch trees, trying to avoid a breakdown in front of them.

The Red had noticed him.
Of course...

"Come sit with us." Virgil invited him as he approached.

A giggle escaped the white's throat. "No... no time... mein Herr... he he... have... to search...yes..."

"Very well, suit yourself." He turned halfway before looking back. "It is good to see you again, Sir."

Jack grinned.
"Heh... s... same to you... mein Herr..." before The Red could return to his friends... he spoke again "Wait..."

The red stopped again.
"Hm?"

Jack made a few steps forward, a greedy look on his face. "... Have... you seen the... the dragon doe around.... lately...?" He had to know... had to know...

"She has cheated death, and I catch her living scent in the air frequently."

The white stared at him. A strange look on his face. He started to giggle...
"He... hehe... cheated.... cheated....death... he he.. see... see... he he..."
Yes... yes... that's what he wanted to hear... that's it....

"Seems to be an awfully common occurance around here."

Jack nodded absend minded... mumbling...
"Hehe yes... yes... it is... it iss... see see... cheaed death... hehe... that's... not a murder then... no no... so... it never happened... hehe no...yes...that's..."
Slowly he trotted forward... obviously he forgot about The Red... cought in his own thoughts...

""Sir, wait."
The white perked his ears, didn't turn around...
""She suffers from amnesia."

Amnesia.
Amnesia.
Lost memories.

"Does she.... does she... hhmm..." a thoughtfull look appeared on the stag's face. Then he started to grin again... noded... as if he was just talking to himself in his mind...

Yes... no memory. What had happend... didn't happen...
... no. No murder... nothing happened.

He started to move again. Absent minded... a grin on his face....

Virgil said nothing further, turned around himself, turned his back on the senseless babbling stag.

Jack moved on and on... like the thoughts in his head.
Illrose was alive.
He was sure about that... not only that... that he trusted on Herr Virgils words...
... he had his own experiences with death in this place...

It was not the same as in his world.

He snickered.
Yes... she was alive
She was alive.... and she had amnesia...

".... nichts ist passiert.
('... nothing happened.')
He nodded, laughed.

"Nein, nein.... nichts ist passiert... he he nichts... kein.... kein mord...."
('No, no.... nothing happened... he he... nothing.... no... no murder...')

Yes... nothing happened... he didn't kill her.
The grin in his face got wider, almost surreal...
... his mind started to cling to this self-deception... forced this lie to be the truth...
.... at least in his little world....

Nothing had happened...
... no one died...
... nothing to regret...

Jack broke down.
Finally his body faild him, didn't want to move any further...
... but it was not neccessary to move any further...

... he had the proof...
... he had his truth...

The stag's head sunkt to the ground... exhaution forced him to close his eyes.
He could feel how this body healed...
... but it would take more time...

.... and he had no time.
Not at the moment...
... should go back again...
Back to his own world.

Continuing his escape...
... trying to get home.

He was done here... for now.

Illrose was alive.
Alive. Thanks god he didn't...

And she knew nothing...
.... thank's god she didn't...

Jack started to grin again.
Slowly his body faded...
... until it vanished in a dark cloud...

Everything was fine.
