The Last Farewell (shortstory/vent writing)

Brief warning - It's a sad story, if the title and song didn't give that away.

She had loved him.
More than anyone she had ever known, she had loved him - and he loved her. They were a team, inseparable, one.
All her life she had been pushed and beaten down, but this one person had reached out to her, pulled her close, told her she was beautiful, she was special, she was wanted. In return, she was a constant presence in his life, always listening, giving herself without expecting anything in return. He promised her forever, and she promised him her heart.

But something black, a voice as sweet as honey whispered doubts into his ear, and he began to question.

It was sudden, the day he told her there was no spark left for her in his life. He said he felt no desire for her presence, even though he wanted to. They vowed to try to revive what had somehow slipped away, but every time she reached for him he was further from her grasp. He did not tell her she was beautiful, he did not tell her how special she was to him. He lashed after every comment she made, and though she fought fiercely the honeyed voice had enveloped him long before she ever had a chance to save him from it.

He asked her to go, but her legs were frozen to the ground; beyond their tiny island sanctuary the world raged, vicious and seething with poisoned fangs. Her eyes wild with fear, she asked if he realized that he threw her into certain despair.
He whispered that he understood, but he did not want her any longer.

Ugly, alone, and unwanted, she turned and walked into the fray.

But still her heart would not let her hate him for all the teeth which met within her skin.
