Ravyn's picture

It had been after a fresh rain when there was a shift, that the dirt began to churn, and soil coagulate. Waves of thunder shook the forest and you, once nothing, and yet, a part of everything, suddenly were being pulled down into its stirring center as if tied to a weight by the end of a string. The poppy-family wept, unwilling to let you go, unwilling to see you leave; their delicate sprouts held on tight as the floor rippled up, until they, too, were uprooted, upturned, forced to make room in your favor—your form. And then, with a great big heave of your newfound ribcage, you—plastered in the mud of your home and remains of the family which cradled you—choked, vomited, took your first breath—and cried out into the empty forest.
