Jessie was born into a broken family. His father was a simple man and easily overwhelmed. Jessie’s parents were already having issues between them even before Jessie’s birth but Jessie’s differences, which became more apparent as he got older, was the last straw for the traditional man and in the end Jessie’s father abandoned mother and child. Jessie was but four years old.

The pair struggled for a time but upon a distant relative’s passing Jessie’s mother inherited a nice sum of money and a large piece of land. Jessie’s mother went to school and achieved her dream of becoming an entomologist. She began to travel with a team that often kept her away for months and even years at a time.

As Jessie grew out of the need for a nanny he often found himself alone. He had few to no friends, held fast by social fears. Such fears that kept him quiet and aloof which often had him labeled in the schools as stuck up and unapproachable. Jessie finds himself often feeling very lonely. He eagerly awaits his mother’s returns and clings to her during her short visits home.

Jessie found ways to entertain himself alone, small sources of happiness. He visited a local theater regularly. The theater was where he fell in love with the sound of violins, even picking up a violin himself though he plays very poorly despite constant practice. It was also where he fell in love with dance and secrets himself away to perform for an imaginary audience often. He took up hobbies such as observing and collecting butterflies which kept him out exploring the woods behind his house. It was by this way that he happened upon The endless Forest through an ancient hollow oak he found on the property while exploring.

One could imagine Jessie’s surprise the first time he found his body transformed and a peaceful, magical forest filled with odd deer like creatures. Jessie feels at peace in the forest and visits it often though he is not quite sure how he can move between the two worlds. Jessie took on the name Nejime while in the forest because he thought it sounded more magical and more fitting for the forest.

Personality

First impressions are perhaps Nejime’s worst enemy. He is socially awkward and when first approached by another his first reaction is to appear more confident but at the same time to draw back. This behavior has given others the impression that he is proud and snobbish. To worsen others’ opinions of himself Nejime is known to get irritable and snappy when uncomfortable in certain situations.

Despite what one may first perceive Nejime is neither proud nor has he any delusions of superiority. In fact it is quite the opposite. Nejime’s anxiety of not feeling good enough runs high and he struggles daily to smother the overwhelming feelings of lack of worth. Because of that he will try to act coolly around others at all times, giving him a masquerade of false pride. He paints himself up extravagantly to try and appear brilliant and beautiful to help hide the truth of the anxiety that he continuously feels. However it does not seem to make him feel too much better about himself and only serves to push away any possible positive connections with others.

Nejime desperately craves the company of others despite his fears and will often be found lingering off at the sidelines of a group or quietly watching a lone soul from afar but rarely approach anyone on his own. Between his need but lack of companionship and low self-esteem can also make him rather vulnerable, even gullible to flattery and praise. He can easily get wrapped up in compliments and manipulated by his flatterers.

Part of Nejime’s uncertainty within himself may have to do with that he is uncertain of his identity. Nejime is neither a boy nor a girl or rather he is both. His appearance and behavior balances between the conventional concept of what is a man and what is a woman, taking on traits from both genders. Nejime has not decided to identify himself either way and it can sometimes be very confusing and uncomfortable for himself and others that feel they need an ‘explanation‘.

Nejime has a great love of butterflies and thus loves any flowers that would attract them. In his mind the creatures are the image of perfection and he strives to follow their example and break from his own cocoon.

Nejime has a goofy side. When he thinks he’s alone he may prance in flowerbeds and dance openly by himself. He secretly loves to dance but could never do so when knowing someone is watching.

Nejime is uncomfortable around children and fawns. It is not that he dislikes children he just doesn’t know how to react to or treat them.
